The Despicable and Dreadful Donovans by Devyn Crockett

Action-packed and filled with unexpected twists at every turn, the television series Ray Donovan has acquired a large fan base and created a substantial following. Created by Ann Bidermann, the show has some big stars in it. Liev Schreiber and John Voight are some of the stars that have roles in this Showtime production. The series is about a professional Hollywood “fixer” with some issues that need fixing in his own life. The main character, Ray Donovan, works as a “fixer” for a man named Ezra Goldman. With his small but very qualified team behind him, Avi and Lena, there is no job too tough for the much respected and feared Ray Donovan. Although Ray deals with corrupted lawmen, murders, thieves, and much more criminal scum, the toughest task of all has to do with his family. On a basis of action, suspense, ease of comprehension, and production quality, I will grade the show.
Seeing as how Ray Donovan is a drama, action is not the show’s main focus. There are some points in the show where there is really no action going on apart from a few typical punches thrown or a couple heated arguments. During the low times of the series, it is easy to see where the audience may lose interest slighty. While this is true for most of the series, Ray Donovan does provide the audience with a bit of action here and there. Rays job entails that he must sometimes use violent, sometimes deadly, actions. While Ray Donovan is not your shoot-‘em-up Hollywood gun flick, it still delivers some action which is why it earns a 3 out of 5 stars in the action category.
What Ray Donovan lacks in action it definitely makes up for in suspense. There is just twist after unexpected twist laid throughout this show. The plot is very hard to predict and never allows the viewers to get too comfortable with the direction in which the story is temporarily going. The series leaves the viewers watching intently for what could possibly come next. Ray Donovan absolutely evokes that edge-of-your-seat feeling out of the audience and leaves the watchers anxious for the next week’s spectacle. The shows ability to consistently and successfully leave its audience in suspense earns it a score of 5 out of 5 stars in the suspense realm.
Even though Ray Donovan has a somewhat twisty plot, viewers are still able to watch the show with great ease of comprehension. The audience knows at all times what is going on at the moment it is happening. Unlike some television shows that have plots that do not follow straight lines, Ray Donovan does not confuse its audience which earns the show a high score of 5 out of 5 stars in ease of comprehension.
Ray Donovan is based in California where the culture is just about as diverse as the population. The TV show does a superb job of accurately encompassing the assorted cultural climate of California. Having said that, the show rotates around the same 10 or so location which limits the show’s variability. Nevertheless, with watching this show, you are provided an actual taste of California. Great camera work as well as famous, well rounded actors also makes up this show. Live Schreiber gives an awesome performance a Ray Donovan making the character and consequently the entire show believable. Due to the accurate depiction of the story’s setting as well as the talented cast, Ray Donovan acquires a well-deserved score of 5 out of 5 stars in production quality.
Some alterations that the producers of Ray Donovan could make would be to possibly add more action as well as make for a more various setting. There could be more shootouts or longer fight scenes put into the show. There may even be some room for some car chases just to spice up the plot a bit. Another positive addition may be that of a more fluctuating setting. Even though the show depicts California almost perfectly, there is still room for a more wide ranging setting to be added into the show.

Overall Ray Donovan is a great show and deserves all of the hype that surrounds it. The cast of the show do an awesome job of acting and provide the basis for a relatable but interesting show. All together, the show is extremely suspenseful, intensely believable, and very well worth the watch.
